More Than a Reflection: Ways to Play with the Tummy Time Discovery Mirror

The Sensaroo Tummy Time Discovery Mirror isn't just a play room accessory, it’s a window into your baby’s developing mind! In the early months, your baby doesn't yet understand that the friend in the mirror is actually them, and once they do, they love to check themselves out!

Here are a few ideas on how you can use this simple play tool to create connections and help your little one reach their milestones. While some of these ideas are fantastic for specific age ranges, others can be carried through right until your little one is a toddler!

The Tummy Time Hero - 0–6 Months

  • The Classic Prop: Place the mirror 20–30cm in front of your baby during tummy time. The sight of a "human face" is the best motivation for them to lift their head, strengthening those vital neck and shoulder muscles.

  • The Vanishing Act, AKA, Peek-a-Boo: Drape a lightweight scarf over the mirror (like our Sensory Play Chiffon Scarves). Ask, "Where’s [Baby's Name]?" and then whoosh it away with a cheerful "Peek-a-boo!" This helps your baby with object permanence and the idea that things (and people!) still exist even when they’re hidden.

  • Funny Faces & Feelings: With your baby in your lap, show your reflection in the mirror. Make exaggerated faces like a big smile for "Happy," a yawn for "Sleepy," or a wide-eyed look for "Surprised." It’s a wonderful way to showcase and explore emotional literacy with your baby.

The Sitter & Explorer - 6–12 Months

  • Who is that?: Angle the mirror toward your face and say your name (e.g., "Mummy"). Then, tilt the mirror toward your baby and say their name. This helps them begin the journey of self-recognition.

  • Anatomy 101: Point to your baby’s features in the reflection. "There are [Baby's Name]'s ears! And there is your nose!" Touch the feature on their body and then point to it in the mirror to help them map out their own body.

  • Suction Fun: Use the mirror’s smooth surface to stick silicone suction toys or "fidget" suckers onto the glass. Your little one will love the resistance of pulling them off, which is great for fine motor strength.

The Movers & Growers - 12 Months +

  • Level Up: As your baby starts to sit, kneel, or stand, move the mirror to higher surfaces like a coffee table or a low shelf. Use their curiosity to encourage them to reach new heights on their knees or standing to help them practice their balance.

  • Problem Solvers: Gently push the mirror out of its stand and say, "Oh no! Can you help me fix it?" Encourage your toddler to help you pop it back in. This builds hand-eye coordination and a sense of accomplishment.

  • The "Big Kid" Routine: When it’s time to start brushing teeth and combing hair, bring the Discovery Mirror into the bathroom. Having their own "toddler-sized" mirror makes the routine less intimidating and lets them mimic your movements as you brush together.

Sensaroo Pro-Tip:

The Tummy Time Discovery Mirror is lightweight for a reason! As many of the ideas above can be implemented across a range of environments or locations, slide it into your complimentary Sensaroo Travel Pouch so you can bring it along to the park or a friend's house! It’s a familiar "home base" for your baby in a new environment, helping them feel secure while they play.
